Well, honestly, it ain’t many times I can say something good horror related happens in my vicinity, but this Labor Day weekend something has. Norfolk’s own Naro Expanded Cinema, a great old vintage theater in the historic Ghent district, shows the ultra-classic Creature from the Black Lagoon in 3D; the way you oughta see it! Even better, it’s hosted by local horror TV host legend Dr. Madblood. The Creature swims all weekend, so if you’re close by it might be worth a road trip to Norfolk to see this... in 3D. As for me, I saw it opening night, Friday at 11:30 and I was impressed by both the amount of people that turned out and the print of the movie. The print looks good and the 3D FX work extremely well. Always heard this was one the best three-dimensional film ever and I can’t say that’s not true after seeing it on the big screen. Hell, I haven’t seen anything like it since Friday the 13th part 3 in 3D. The movie probably ranks as my favorite of the Universal creature flicks; seeing this on the big screen for the 1st time ever was truly a treat.
The movie serves as part of what I hope will be a continuing series of “cult classics” that the theater is planning on showing. I’ve seen two there so far and as the saying goes, so far, so good as The Exorcist played there a few weekends back and was a evil as ever. Perhaps the almost Midnight Movie is making a comeback in some places, in some small way. Let’s face it; the days of the drive-in and even the independent theater are all but gone, so might as well enjoy any little bit of fun and nostalgia we can. If you have any similar goings on in your neck of the woods, support it and tell a friend.
