Scaremongers: The Top 4 Horror Villains Of All Time

We all enjoy a horror movie from time to time. While the plot, incidents, and character choices may sometimes come across as questionable, there's no doubt that a good horror villain can make up for it. From some old-school classics through to some of the most recent fright factories, we take you through the very best of horror villains of all time, but not before we give a nod to those who started it all.

The basis of modern horror villainy

Modern horror villains are often based on old folklore, ancient myths, or literary genius from centuries past. Folklore is always a fun area to explore as it derives from real fear that people had about denizens with horrifying capabilities. Ancient myths are also a good way to go, with many of them spawning super creatures that would simply dominate humans.

But, when looking to where the modern craze for a good horror villain started, we can turn to authors Bram Stoker and Mary Shelley, creators of Dracula and Frankenstein. Both books inspired fear into their readers while also portraying a deeper story, inspiring many future storylines and films, such as Horror of Dracula (1958), Victor Frankenstein (2015), as well as TV series like Penny Dreadful (2014-16) – which starred many classic horror villains – and games as varied as the Monster Cash slot game at William Hill and the prolific 29-title console series Resident Evil.

They bore a genre, and now we get to enjoy all of the terrifying horror villains spawned from creations such as Dracula and Frankenstein.

4. The Shark

We'll start off with a creature that wasn't inherently a villain, its natural objectives to hunt and feed simply crossed over with a human desire to enjoy the beach. Really, the shark in Jaws (1975) was just a massive shark that had swum into popular waters and found some easy meals. This is one of the reasons why the shark was such a brilliant horror villain and led to generations of people fearing what was in the water.

3. Jigsaw

The reason why Jigsaw is such a fantastic villain is that his he murders because of legitimate moral motives. In the Saw franchise (2004-17), he sees a person or some people do something discernibly wrong, he captures them, and then he puts them through horrifying puzzles and ultimatums to escape their inevitably gruesome fate. He's a very clever villain, and anyone who infringes his moral code is in for a drawn out and terrifying end.

2. Leatherface

There's something particularly horrifying about a villain who has no real motive, no real objective and is simply killing all that stands in its path. Butchering anyone unlucky enough to appear in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974, 2003), Leatherface is a no-nonsense behemoth of a man, strong enough to hunt down anyone anywhere, and intent on killing them for no apparent reason other than the fact that they're there.

1. Pennywise

One of many of Stephen King's horror masterpieces, Pennywise takes something that was a very innocent and very popular part of many birthday parties for children and makes it into an indomitable monster. The demon clown Pennywise, who stars in the novel and films IT, lures children in with balloons or candy before tormenting them by making them see their deepest darkest fears come to life, and then it kidnaps and murders them. Everyone was so excited for the latest rendition of King's novel that IT (1990, 2017) smashed horror film records, and most certainly didn't disappoint those brave enough to pay admission.

There are so many fantastic horror villains around, many of which unfortunately didn't make it onto this short list, but there're sure to be even more fantastic beasts, slayers, criminal masterminds, and demons on the horizon.
