story: Steve Niles
art: Ben Templesmith
I actually enjoyed the movie version of this story far more than this graphic novel. I think this is because part of the book takes place in New Orleans, where a woman and her son wan't to prove the existence of the vampires--and the vampires themselves aren't all that creepy here. They speak English and come from all over the world to rain down on Barrow and suck the town dry. This is the first time they've done such a thing and this pisses off the lead vampire, who then directs all his undead brethren to burn the town down and make it look like an accident. Also, not a lot of time is spent with the other characters. Eben and Stella are definitely the main ones here and unlike the movie, they aren't at conflict with one another. And with Ben Templesmith's artwork, I think Eben is supposed to be an Eskimo.
Ben Templesmith's art is interesting, and he does draw a disturbing vampire, but all his regular folk look deformed or like retards. And the many of the vampires here have the pointed ears and bald head and look like Nosferatu.
This first book is not quite what I expected.
