Author: Wen Spencer
The first in a series of novels, this tells the tale of Ukiah Oregon, an expert tracker who is something more than human. Ukiah (he took his name from the town near which he was found) is one of the most unique characters I've come across in a long while. He was found by a biologist living with a pack of Timber wolves in the Pacific Northwest, then was raised by that woman and her girlfriend in Pittsburgh where within six years he was 'civilized' and working for a detective agency. In fact, he's partners with the founder, Max. He has some strange abilities such as being able to sense things and read peoples' DNA, which he attributes to being raised by wolves. But when he encounters 'The Pack', who the city police believe are some type of criminal gang, he's told that he's one of them, their 'cub', which seems to be true because they all bear a strong family resemblance. And there's also the fact that they are alien hybrids and Ukiah was created to help conquer the planet. While all this is revealed, Ukiah falls for a hot FBI agent named Indigo Zheng, who has mutual feelings for him and takes it all in stride that she's dating an alien.
The author throws in a lot of information and unlikely scenarios in a short span of time yet successfully blends the werewolf, vampire and alien elements all together. Ukiah is like Tarzan working on THE X-FILES. I look forward to reading the other books in the series.
