ANCESTOR reads like James Rollins writing the script for ATTACK OF THE KILLER SHREWS.
On a secret island in Lake Superior, a team of scientists have managed to bring to life the ancestor of all mammals in the hopes of creating a sort of 'universal donor' to replace human organs. But this creature turns out to be a ferocious predator - and far larger than imagined.
The reason they are on the island is that the CIA has gotten wind of the experiment and deems it too dangerous and wants to destroy it before it can turn into a disaster - something the head of the genetics company has found out. So he quickly relocates all of his personnel to a remote island no one knows about. The developing embryos of this prehistoric creature, sort of a giant opossum with fins, are implanted in cows - but they are growing way too fast and are basically birthed like those creatures in ALIENS.
Although the book does have some clich ©s, such as the ex-CIA reluctant hero, the misfit scientists, the evil guys who run the genetics company and the 'science gone awry'scenario, author Sigler nevertheless manages to create a fast-paced, interesting horror novel that begs a sequel.
