author: David Coleman
Anne Cheron returns to her small Texas hometown after her brother, Eddie, is pronounced missing by the authorities. She's not sure what she can do but feels obligated, as he's helped her through some rough times. Unfortunately, his disappearance isn't because of an accident but because of a huge eight foot tall monster. Yes, bigfoot ate her brother.
But here's the twist. ANCIENT LAKE offers an interesting explanation of what these creatures are and how they've managed to hide from human sight all these thousands of years, which I thought was a cool premise. In part it reminds me of that KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER episode HORROR IN THE HEIGHTS with that flesh-eating hindu demon, the Rakshasa.
But Anne also has to deal with a more human monster in the form of Deputy Sheriff Travis Heathridge, who has had a crush on her since high school, and their "relationship" has grown all out of proportion in his mind. He was taunted in school and so takes out all his anger and frustration on his job. He thinks Anne is the solution to all his problems but she has her own crap to deal with, such as her bi-polar disorder, which has caused chaos in her life.
Anne soon hooks up with Josh Rhulman, who is in town doing research on another book, on the elusive creature. He gets a closeup look when the town's levee breaks during a bad storm and he and Anne take refuge on an old man's houseboat, defending it from the monsters.
At times I thought there was too much internal dialogue going with the characters and that this probably should have been focused on one or two of them, not most of the people in the book. Still, ANCIENT LAKE is an interesting idea and hopefully the beginning of a continuing series of supernatural thrillers.
