This new graphic novel, based on the Joss Whedon ANGEL characters, has Gunn and Illyria go on a road trip together. Gunn is back to being human, after having been a vampire when Los Angeles was sucked into hell in AFTER THE FALL. And Illyria, a former goddess, is getting in touch with her human side and also proving that she is someone other than the deceased Fred. The pair encounter a huge worm, Baticus, which used to be one of Illyria's pets and it wants revenge now that she's in a human form and much weaker. They also help a group of demons who are being persecuted by another demon gang--but ultimately find out the demons they saved weren't so harmless
The main thing these continuing comic book stories can do that the television series couldn't is something on this large of a scale, especially the battle between Illyria and her former giant worm pet. The artwork by David Messina and heavy inks by Gaetano Carlucci captures this darker tale well.
