This is the third in the Ukiah Oregon series, about a guy who is a human alien hybrid who was raised by wolves and then adopted by a human couple. Now, he works as a tracker for a private investigator. At the beginning of this book he's hired to track down a missing boy, who may in fact be the latest in a series of local kidnappings.
Things get complicated when he draws the attention of an agent from Homeland Security, who thinks he's somehow associated with this cult called the Temple of New Reason. This cult has come across the evil aliens, the Ontongard, and think they are actually demons they have to defeat. The reason the Homeland Security agent is interested in all this is because his fiance had ditched him years before to join this organization and he wants to find out why. So it's a bit personal. And it becomes very personal for Ukiah when the cult shows up at his office, guns him down, and steals his son, Kittaning. This, of course, involves "The Pack", which are the "good" aliens who broke away from the Ontongard long ago.
I didn't quite enjoy this as much as the previous two novels, I think because the villains were cult members and it seemed too stereotypical. However, it is interesting when Ukiah and his partner discover a new batch of hidden alien weapons and the threat they pose to the planet.
