The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The Black Dossier
Author: Alan Moore
Artist: Kevin O'Neill
I found this new installment of THE LEAGUE extremely funny. It takes place in the 1950's, during the Cold War, and Mina is a secret agent. There's a scene at the beginning where she is on a date with a special British Agent named Jimmy, who uses a lot of gadgets and drinks Martinis. Unfortunately he's also a woman beater. The gender changing Orlando, who is three-thousand years old, is a central character, there are lots of Flash Gordon type spaceships and a journey to a fantastic world at the end that's at odds with the rest of the tale. This part of the graphic novel is in blue and red 3-D, which is true to the spirit of the book since that came out in the 50's as well.
The one thing that I didn't like about the book, and why I prefer Volumes 1 and 2 much better, is that there is too much attention to detail, from the 1950's fake advertisements to postcards written by the various characters. And chunks of solid prose break up the graphic novel. These segments aren't nearly as interesting and break up the flow of the book.
If you enjoyed the previous books you will like this, not love it.
