Written by Sephera Giron.Vanessa is a forty-year-old witch who looks half her age. In the tradition of Elizabeth Bathory she maintains her youth by bathing in the blood of virgins. When she starts losing her immortality her skin cracks, oozes pus and starts flaking off, revealing a mass of hundreds of scars underneath. She uses her victim's skin to cover up her own twisted flesh. She also keeps their spirits in the glass jars that adorn the shelves in her small cottage.Although she's a murderer she views herself as a good person and tries to help the people who come to her for Tarot readings. There's a surge of husbands who have disappeared, most likely cheating on their wives, and she investigates because she feels sorry for the women. It turns out that there's another 'immortal' who is in town who maintains her youthful appearance by 'entertaining the gods' in doing horrible deeds. In the meantime, though, the witch Vanessa has a new man in her life, David, and by the emotions he provokes she feels that he may be 'the one'. He's young and handsome, though still a bit hung up on his former girlfriend. When Vanessa's ex-boyfriend Demian suddenly appears he does everything he can to infiltrate her life, even if that's murder.I thought it interesting that even though the main character in this book is basically evil, author Giron makes you still feel sorry for her and root for her side. Also, what happens to many of the characters is totally unpredictable and throws the reader a curve. BORROWED FLESH is the first of Sephera Giron's work I've read and now I'm definitely going to be reading more.Available from Leisure books www.dorchesterpub.com
