BOTTOMFEEDER is a slightly different sort of vampire book in that it tells you how much it sucks to be one of the undead.
The protagonist, Phil Merman, is a New Yorker who appears to be twenty-five years old, though he is more than twice that age, due to being bitten by a vampire. But the only thing this immortality has given him is anger from his aging parents, a divorce from his wife and crappy, night-time jobs. He also has a high school friend who haunts him - and who believes that he's been addicted to plastic surgery, because of his youthful appearance.
When Phil feeds, he only goes after the low-lifes of the city, until he's befriended by Eddie, another vampire who introduces him to a whole subculture of vampires. Then he sees how the majority of them live, importing live blood from other countries (one of my favorite scenes is a vampire bar where the victims are 'on tap').
The thing about this book is that it so accurately captures that 'New York City Living' angst that only a native or someone who's lived there for at least a decade, can relate to.
BOTTOMFEEDER is surprisingly realistic, with a memorable 'everyman' character and a sarcastic sense of humor. You will enjoy it.
