Alex Cross, Washington Cop, psychologist, and liason with the FBI on serial killers, fights for his life in this one!Returning villain Gary Soneji (from ALONG CAME A SPIDER) wants revenge on Cross for foiling his plans from a long time ago.Just like with KISS THE GIRLS, Patterson throws ANOTHER possible serial killer into the mix---a Mr. Smith from Europe. How is he connected to Cross? Is this killer also Soneji? A Soneji wannabe? Or does he have more to do with the hot-shot cop chasing Mr. Smith---or is this new troubled cop actually the killer?Although this book is a terrorific read, suspension of disbelief is TOTALLY necessary to get into things. There's easily a dozen plotholes (which I wrote down once, but forgot what I did with the notes) and a lot of the proceedings seem to rely on far-fetched 'chance' and 'assumtions.'Still, this book is great fun, mega-violent, and the villains are positively detestable. The action scenes (particular a subway chase, which will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up) are powerful and the ending is really, really, REALLY bizarre. You won't see it coming.Cross is almost killed off in this book, and with the introduction of another manhunter/cop, it's almost like Patterson was considering offing Cross and moving in another direction. Glad he didn't!Violent, twisted, but far out there, CAT AND MOUSE is still a worthy entry in the Alex Cross legacy.
