This is the 8th of the RUNELORDS series and is a parallel novel to the 7th book, THE WYRMLING HORDE. It takes place on a more primitive world where magic exists. Runelords refer to those individuals who have taken on the endowments of others through a magical process involving a substance called blood steel. With it, they are able to take the powers of other people, whether it be intelligence, strength or speed.
The novel follows a warrior named Borenson, and his wife, Myrrima, who find themselves in a strange situation. When the two worlds merged into one, he merged with his counterpart on this world, which is a seven foot tall horned giant. Now, he has both these new memories and his old ones. He wants to protect his family but Myrrima finds it difficult to love this creature that was once her husband. And Borenson, now adopting the name Aaath Ulber, since that personality is strongest, needs to find out what happened to his other wife and children. He protects them from dangers as they cross this strange land and they manage to secure a boat. However, they find out that there's a more powerful enemy on this world, the Wyrmlings. They are even larger than himself and distantly related to man. Their leader is the one who is holding the human Gaborn Val Orden prisoner deep within an underground lair. Gaborn is the one who is responsible for combining the worlds to begin with...
Ever since I've begun reading the RUNELORDS books I've been in awe of the sheer spectacle of them. They make the LORD OF THE RINGS books seem quaint. The entire series of Farland's books is highly recommended.
