Author: E.E. Knight
This second novel in the VAMPIRE EARTH series continues the story of David Valentine, a human who lives in a future world dominated by these Cthulhu-esque monsters called Kurians. He is a member of the Wolves, an elite fighting force very effective at getting to the enemy. But when half of his company is killed he faces a court-martial.
Although he resigns his position as a Wolf, he soon becomes a CAT, another 'augmented' group of stealth fighters. Cats primarily work alone, as spies, but he has a teacher in the form of Alessa Duvalier, a Cat who seems to be extremely lucky.
Their first mission is to go into the Kurian Zone and investigate the Twisted Cross, which is a Kurian group of fighters who use combat experience humans controlling Reapers (the vampiric agents of the Kurians).
This novel also introduces Ahn-Kha, a huge Wookie-like Grog (a generic term which refers to the various alien soldiers the Kurians brought with them when they invaded earth forty-five years before) who becomes fast friends with Valentine.
As with the first novel, WAY OF THE WOLF, this book is highly recommended.
