In Dayton Beach we're introduced to rebellious teenager Christina and her police officer father. He tells her not to associate with her girlfriend, Trish, who he deems as a bad influence. In truth, she's the bad influence. Not only is she a cheerleader but a drug dealer at her high school. She's pushing a new drug which is supposed to be five times stronger than ecstasy. Later, we're shown what happens when one of her customers shares some of this with his girlfriend--they both see a headless motorcycle rider, complete with a scythe, like The Reaper of Death. The sense is that this drug enables them to see this entity and vice-versa.
Christina also has ambivalent feelings about her ex-football playing boyfriend, Tyler. One minute she's saving him from getting caught cheating on a math test, then tells him to go screw someone else when he starts hitting on her. During a football game she drinks a bit too much and messes up the cheerleading pyramid. She is not happy. So when her friend Trish invites her to go to a Bikers festival with some other girls, she goes and sees something that unsettles her...
This new horror comic held my interest and I really like the idea of a street drug with supernatural abilities. I can't recall seeing that anywhere. Best of all, the book doesn't shy away from the gore--there are disembowelings and beheadings galore. And if you can't get enough of the book, it's currently being adapting into a television web series...
