The first issue of this new series from Zenescope is off to a great start. It's based on the original character created by H.P. Lovecraft, not a continuation or tie-in to the Re-Animator movies. Here, Herbert West is a brilliant college student who is trying to defeat death. A flashback story gives us the reason he's so obsessed with this--his young sister and mother were hit by a bus, which he witnessed. The dean of the school wants him to stop his experimenting but he won't give it up. He needs fresh bodies so he hires some local color to acquire the corpses for him--and they might be murdering people. It's basically THE DOCTOR AND THE DEVILS.
The biggest difference, between this version of West and others I've seen, is that he has a girlfriend, Megan, who supports him and helps him and much of the text of the comic is from her point of view. It makes him more human. The zombies are also very cool looking, with glowing green eyes.
