Author: Alan BrennertThis is a scathing view of Hollywood with a sci-fi slant.Jim DeKalb is a struggling actor who is offered the part of a lifetime-to portray James Dean in a biopic. But Dalmatton Studios, the producer of the movie, is casting the movie in a weird way they are imparting the personality of the celebrities directly into the actor's brains via a newly created device which implants thought patterns. They are also making a movie about the Manson family and that soon gets out of control.DeKalb's girlfriend, Marnie Eilers, is a reporter who is investigating the studio and what she finds out profoundly disturbs her. Are struggling actors actually willing to obtain the personality of an icon while losing their own personalities? The answer turns out to be a big 'Yes.She has to decide if she's going to help her boyfriend and if she's going to expose Dalmatton Studios for what they are doing.I found the premise of the story to be creepy enough-and if this device actually existed I'm sure people would readily use it, especially in Hollywood. DeKalb and Eilers come off as very real people dealing with their own shit and not wanting it to affect their relationship. This is Brennart's first novel. And while I enjoyed it I think his TIME AND CHANCE and KINDRED SPIRITS are far superior. I don't know if this is true or not but it seems like he was venting quite a bit about the whole interactions of Hollywood personalities and he should know since he's primarily a Hollywood screenwriter (CHINA BEACH, LA LAW, et cetera).
