Author: Brian Keene This is a direct-sequel to 2003's THE RISING, continuing the story of Jim Thurmond, his son Danny, and a group of human survivors in a world taken over by zombies. But these aren't your mindless flesh-eaters from NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. These corpses are possessed by demons, whose sole purpose is to insult God and help destroy the Earth. These demons have even taken over the corpses of animals and birds. When one body is destroyed the demon simply inhabits another body. The survivors find themselves rescued by a helicopter of Mr. Ramsey's, an 'eccentric' billionaire who is holed up in the Ramsey Tower, a huge building smack dab in the middle of New York City. Since the zombie invasion began he has rescued survivors in the city and surrounding area, convinced that his building is impenetrable. Zombie birds hurl themselves at the windows, zombie rats try to slip in through cracks. And Jim's survival may depend on a homeless man named Pigpen, who knows of a safe haven far beneath the city streets.Romero's LAND OF THE DEAD has a similar set up (a group taking refuge in a building, which is run by a crazy rich guy), only here it's multiplied ten-fold, both in scale and in gore. Author Brian Keene's undead epic, CITY OF THE DEAD, is 'THE STAND' of zombie tales.
