Author: Joe HaldemanEighty or so years in the future an astronomy professor, Aurora Bell, gets a message from space that forewarns of the arrival of extraterrestrial visitors on New Year's Day.Earth is on the brink of another world war and the last thing anyone wants is this happening. After the communication is made public knowledge people react in all different ways. Some think it a hoax and others prepare. But as the time nears the professor begins to think that it may all be an elaborate hoax. The future world is very plausible and the characters are all quite fascinating, particularly in the way author Haldeman develops them. Each chapter is from the point of view of a different character. One chapter may be about the professor-and then the next one the same person she was just talking to. Each chapter leads directly into the next one.As alien invasion books go this is an original-and the ending did surprise me.
