Director Eric Red's graphic novel from IDW Publishing brings refreshing life back to the zombie genre. Set in the near future, it concerns a dozen astronauts who are on a journey to Saturn. Half of them awaken from cryo sleep to discover that the other half of the crew are zombies. The cryo-fluid is still in their veins-so they're half dead and craving blood. But unlike your typical zombie story where the survivors hole up in a mall or a mineshaft, there's no place to go on a cramped spaceship, which adds to the feeling of dread for the survivors. The zombies could not only eat them but put a hole in the spaceship and kill them all.The real villain, though, is the ship's doctor, who will do anything to stay alive. That means he's more than willing to sacrifice the others. In a pivotal scene between him and a female astronaut, he tells her that he'll have fun with her dead body on the journey back to earth-which is terrible because it doesn't end after death. It has the feeling of dread like the PHANTASM movies-death isn't the worst thing that could happen. The dark, heavily inked artwork by Nick Stakal compliments the tale. The zombies appear very threatening and the gore is not held back. Highly recommended for not only zombie fans but anyone who appreciates a fast-paced, exciting story.Check out the interview with Eric Red on CONTAINMENT in the interview section of buried.com
