This is one of the more frightening apocalyptic tales I've ever read, from the mind of Garth Ennis (THE BOYS, PREACHER). People start behaving violently and the sign that they are infected is a cross-like rash across their faces. The first pages show the opening outbreak from the point-of-view of a few of the continuing characters, then skips ahead a few months where there are more survivors in the group. They are smarter and wiser with dealing with these crazy infected. The leader is a tough woman, a former domestic abuse survivor, and she has a young son she'll do anything for.
There are also a few other kids in the group. But after some short-lived peace they encounter the infected and many are killed. In fact, they encounter a group of them that seem to be able to think and plan out their actions, though they're still totally insane. This makes everything much more dangerous.
CROSSED is definitely not for the faint of heart. If it was a movie it would be an NC-17.
Harrowing, horrible things happen to the survivors and it's both repulsive and morbidly fascinating seeing what the infected look like and do in their vicious insanity. Highly recommended, especially if you're sick of the usual "zombie" tale.
