Written by Frank Marraffino
Art by Drew Rausch
This new horror manga from Tokyopop is a 'film noir' detective story combined with the Cthulhu Mythos, sort of like that movie with Fred Ward, CAST A DEADY SPELL (1991) but done much better. Drew Rausch's art is very 'Grimy' and enhances Frank Marraffino's prose.
A down-on-his luck, hard drinking detective named Max 'Mutt' Mason is hired by the stereotypical buxom blonde to find her sister, Mary. But there are dark forces that want to stop him or do they? There are many-tentacled creatures, zombies held together by insects and a transformation of one of the villains into a giant spider-like creature. One of the things I liked the best in the story is that the Mafia are in fact the guardians of mankind, trying to prevent 'The Old Ones' from awakening from their sleep and taking over the Earth. This book definitely captures that 'Lovecraft Mythos' feel.
I very much look forward to more tales that take place in this peculiar world.
