Adam Senft is a mystery writer who lives in a small town with his wife, Tara, and his dog Big Steve. There's always been something a little peculiar about the nearby forest, usually around Spring. This year, though, while walking the dog, he spies a young woman having sexual relations with what looks like the statue of a half goat/half man creature. But when it blinks he realizes it's alive. This creature is Hylinus, and it will radically change his life. Hylinus wants to impregnate all the women in the town, including Adam's wife. But first he has to convince others that the creature exists, and this includes his neighborhood friends and ultimately the detective, Ramirez, who is investigating related murders and disappearances. Horrible stuff happens to these characters yet it's written in such a way that you still root for them to win.
Horror novels about authors normally rub me the wrong way but in this instance I didn't mind. It seemed sort of extraneous to the events going on, not about "how hard it is to be a writer" vibe that I've gotten from a few of Stephen King's books. Hylinus is also a creepy monster and hammers in the fact that there's not enough goat men in horror books. DARK HOLLOW is highly recommended.
