Written by W. Michael Gear and Kathleen O'Neal Gear. A genetic scientist, who is also a billionaire, wants to protect mankind's closest relatives by 'evening out the playing field' as it were. To do this he has managed to enlarge their brains so they can rationalize and communicate better with humans. Dr. Jim Dutton is one of the anthropologists who thought they were raising a normal bonobo chimp named Umber. But when Umber starts displaying too much intelligence they start to worry. And when the company who owns Umber finds out how their chimp is progressing they demand to have her back--which means bringing her back to Africa. Dr. Dutton ultimately agrees to go, along with his daughter (who considers Umber her sister), to Africa--and once they get there things start to happen. They find out that the 'rejects', the chimps that had a negative/violent reaction to their intelligence are isolated in a certain part of the preserve where they are staying....but soon learn how to use the keys and bridges to escape--and go after the humans who have imprisoned them. This is a cool book--reminded me of Michael Crichton's CONGO crossed with PLANET OF THE APES. Check it out if you're an ape nut.
