DOG WARRIORS is the fourth and final book of the Ukiah Oregon series, which veers off in a completely different direction. It begins with Atticus Steele and his partner, who seem to be drug dealers. They rescue a stranger from the hands of a religious cult, the Temple of New Reason, and are shocked to see that this young man looks remarkably like Atticus. It is Ukiah. When he awakens he tells Atticus that he is his "brother". Long ago, the two had split and formed their own bodies when the original, "Magic Boy" was fatally wounded. Their alien blood is alive and if there's enough of it will form an entirely new creature, in this case two humans. Atticus is reluctant to believe him, since he's been on his own so long, growing up in foster homes his entire childhood. But although there are differences some aspects of their lives, such as Atticus appearing ten to fifteen years older, they are remarkably the same. Atticus really works undercover for the government, helping humans. And his male partner, who is also his lover, is Asian, like Ukiah's girlfriend.
The Temple of New Reason is distributing a new designer drug through some local gangs, but this drug is very dangerous since it's produced with the Ontongard's technology and is actually fatal to humans. They don't know this and are they themselves addicted to the substance. And since Ukiah is involved, so are the "Dog Warriors", his alien-hybrid people. Atticus doesn't immediately trust Ukiah, or accept his own otherworldly origins, and he trusts this wild looking group even less.
These books are like Tarzan combined with the tv show THE INVADERS.
It's too bad the series ended here. It opened up a lot of directions it could have went...
