Peter DeLaSangre is a reclusive mutli-millionaire who lives on an island off of Miama with is ailing father. The reason he lives there, an only occasionally visits the nearby city, is that he's not human. He's a dragon. His father is dying and stays in Dragon form. But Peter was raised as a human and so always strives to fit among them and even takes human woman lovers. He gets into trouble when he brings one woman home to his island abode and ends up killing her when he's hungry - and her brother is relentless in trying to prove that Peter did indeed kill her. Unbeknownst to him she left her brother a note saying she was meeting Peter for dinner.
One day Peter is surprised when he discovers that there is a female dragon nearby, a dragon who is beginning to go into heat. His father tells them that's how it works - and that the next time he should be prepared to find her - and fight for her. Because there will be other dragons out there wanting a mate and as dragons are few and far between in this modern world he gets ready.
This is much more of a horror book than it is a fantasy, as it reads as a sort of vampire/werewolf book with the dragon being in the place of the those other monsters. It is the very cool book, particularly the backstory of the dragons, with them being the Captains of the pirate ships in the Caribbean (Peter's grandfather was one such pirate). This is first of a several book series (which you bet I'm going to read).
