Scott Hennessy is a heroin addict in England who is obsessed with a beautiful Native American woman named Mia. He doesn't want to acknowledge it but Mia is a girl from his past, a woman he, and others, did terrible things to long ago. Is she back for revenge? Is she a ghost? Or is she simply a product of Scott's warped, drug induced imagination? The only thing he knows for sure is that he's the only one left alive from a cult he belonged to (he believes she killed them all) and that he must do something radical in order to stop his inevitable end. It's REQUIEM FOR A DREAM meets Peter Straub's GHOST STORY.
This is one of those books that drags you through the gutter, successfully conveying what it's like for Scott to be an addict (for heroin and for his need for Mia). You'll cringe at some of the things this guy goes through, especially the bit about him chopping off his own fingers. But the story drags you along for a reason. It's also unpredictable. Once Scott decides to take off to a reservation in South Dakota, I had no idea where this book was going. Yes, it's a horror book about addiction, monsters and the terrible things people will do to each other and to themselves but it's also a story about getting through all that and somehow emerging whole at the end. Or is it the beginning?
END TIMES is a moving and horrific ghost story well worth your time. It may very well haunt you for some time to come.
