Eureka: Dormant Gene (2010)
Fiction Review by The Gravedigger
02.22.12

Eureka: Dormant Gene (2010) This comic mini-series takes place during the first or second season of the Syfy series EUREKA. Begins with the sheriff's daughter, Zoe, not wanting to go to school at Tesla high. The classes are a bit more advanced than normal school, with Neuroscience, Aerospace engineering. Zoe can't relate to all the nerds--and she's obsessed with the book SUNDOWN, which is basically like TWILIGHT. A fellow student turns into a giant, goes on a rampage--and Zoe is almost killed by a falling statue, until she's pushed out of the way by a guy, Gene. She thinks he's a normal guy--but on the last panel of the first issue we see he's a bit nuts...

In the following issue, we find out that Gene is really a cousin of Deputy Jo, a nerd who tried to ask Zoe out some weeks before. In a flashback he's obsessed with her but is too frightened to talk to her in person. He has invented a serum that can change a person's appearance, making a short person tall, a white person black, et cetera. The person he confides in is Fargo, who wants to be more distinguished looking. So he gets a beard and an older look. He starts selling it to students in school, for cash. So, when he gets the nerve to ask Zoe out and she shoots him down, he takes the serum himself...and becomes the guy we were introduced to in the first issue. So after he saves her from the falling statue after the giant attack she starts to like him. He takes her to the underground biosphere forest we had seen in a second season episode and shuts off the monitoring cameras. The third issue is told from the perspective of another student--and we find out what happened to Zoe. The gene therapy he had created begins to degenerate and turns him into a vampire-like creature. In fact, everyone who has taken the drug--most of the high school--has turned into the pseudo-vamps. The fourth issue gets everything back to normal, though in quite an epic way.

This book is exactly like an episode of the television series if they didn't have to worry about a budget (you can sure be a lot more fantastical with a comic!) and fits well with the continuity. If you're a EUREKA fan this is a must read.
