I must say I enjoyed this second book in the "Morris and Chastain Investigation" series more than the first, perhaps because it's wider in scope and has a fascinating range of supporting characters. These include Hannah Widmark, a mercenary/hunter, who has a traumatic backstory and Colleen O'Donnell, an FBI agent who also happens to be a white witch. Then there are the villains, Pardee, who may be the nastiest bad guy I've come across in a long while, and Grobius, an ancient, dying trillionaire who will do about anything to stay living. And of course, the interaction between partners Quincey Morris and Libby Chastain is always entertaining. I particularly liked the chapter with the giant meat eating bats.
Morris and Chastain's investigation run parallel to the FBI's and they both discover the killings of white witches are connected to Pardee and his employer in preparation of a black magic ceremony that will be performed on Walpurgis Night. Grobius thinks he will be getting immortality while Pardee is planning something very different.
One interesting thing that happens in the story is when Libby and Quincey go to Chicago in search of "Wizard Harry", a definite nod to Harry Dresden of the Jim Butcher series. In fact, I've enjoyed this series so much I may try those Jim Butcher books.
