The setting for this graphic novel is the Fable Community, in the Upper Westside of New York City, where all the storybook characters such as Jack (and the Beanstalk), Beauty & the Beast and Bluebeard live since having fled their Homelands. A jaded Snow White, long divorced from Prince Charming, is director of the town's operations. Old King Cole is the Mayor. The rule for Fables is that they can't draw any attention to themselves or they'll be relocated Upstate to The Farm, where all the non-human Fables (the three little pigs, giants, dragons) have to live. Snow White's twin sister, Rose Red, is missing and her apartment is covered in blood. Bigby Wolf, formerly The Big Bad Wolf who is now in human form, is the sheriff of Fable Town. He holds Jack as a suspect and visits Bluebeard, with whom she was having an affair. Bluebeard is the richest one in the community, worth billions of dollars. He was able to fit his entire castle, through magical means, into a NYC apartment, like Doctor Who's Tardis. It also seems that Bigby, who looks very much the gruff private detective, is interested in Snow White.
I must admit, this first book had me hooked, placing all these storybook characters into a "film noir" scenario. Believe it or not, each consecutive book gets better, so this is definitely a series to check out.
