This continues the story of David Valentine, a soldier who is fighting the Cthulhuesque Kurians in a near-future Earth. Here he's part of a contingent of soldiers trying to rally up supporters in Kentucky when a trap is sprung on them and their leaders are killed. Of course Valentine takes over and tries to take them back to a safe zone. There are some returning characters, namely Ahn-ka, a sort of Wookie-like creature he had befriended several books before and has been searching for ever since. It's sort of a heartbreaking reunion but I wanted a bit more out of it (maybe Ahn-ka's own novel?). This book just seemed like part of a novel, not as satisfying as the previous books in the series.
