Author: John BarnesLyle Peripart, a professor at the University of Auckland, New Zealond, is recruited by industrialist Geoffrey Iphwin to work for his mysterious company. Lyle is the descendent of American expatriates, who had fled the States a hundred years before when the Nazi Axis had taken over the United States. For some unknown reason there's been no communication with the United States for years-and as Peripart discovers, the answer is not simple. Iphwin, for his own reasons, wishes to discover why no one has been in contact with this country-or even wants to be in contact. It's as if some force is preventing people from thinking about the US. Lyle's world soon starts to change. When Helen, his fiance, turns out to be a gun-toting secret agent, he starts to realize that he's crossing over into parallel Earths. In this particular one Helen recounts an entirely different world history, in which America surrendered to the Soviet Union in the 1970's. They band together with several friends, who are also from different parallel worlds, and together they attempt to uncover the mystery.Iphwin turns out to be something not quite human, the parallel-world travel is caused by modern technology and something is trying to kill them all before they discover the secret The closest thing I can compare this novel to is the TV show SLIDERS crossed with THE MATRIX movies. Least to say, FINITY is perhaps the ultimate parallel-worlds novel.
