This STAR TREK novel, which takes place during the first Captaincy of Hikaru Sulu deftly connects the dots between various STAR TREK eras, from the original series to DEEP SPACE NINE.
Sulu is second-in-command for Captain Styles (seen in THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY) and an attack by a renegade Klingon known only as "The Albino" puts him in the captain's chair. But this is not the first time Sulu has run into this adversary---a colony where he and his parents were stationed forty years ago was attacked by him. It's up to hi to connect-the-dots and figure out what this alien is up to.
There's also Ambassador Sarek and his in-training Diplomat, Curzon Dax, who gets along all too well with the Klingon Commanders, Kor, Kang and Koloth. They interfere with "The Abino's" plans and pay the price, as he modifies a virus to kill their first born. Eventually this story is resolved with Jadzia Dax in an episode of DEEP SPACE NINE.
There's a lot of attention to detail and consistencies for the STAR TREK mythos, touching again on why Kirk's era Klingons look different from Picard's and even why the Trill had a different look (weird nose, no spots) in their first appearance on ST:TNG.
FORGED IN FIRE has me stoked for more Captain Sulu adventures...
