I find this novel far more disturbing than Jack Ketchum's OFF SEASON because it takes place in an everyday sort of neighborhood, in the basement of what could be just another suburban household. A teenaged girl is kidnapped and held prisoner by an insane housewife-and put through humiliation, torture and mutilation in excruciating detail. It's both extremely unpleasant and a page-turner, if that makes any sense. Ketchum has this knack for revealing the darkness that exists in humanity. THE GIRL NEXT DOOR is a highly recommended book butt be warned--you may feel like taking a shower or something after you're done reading the thing. I first read this novel fifteen years ago and it still has the same affect.Re-released by Leisure Books.
