After twenty-five years in deep space, a ship with a hundred humans aboard in cryogenic sleep, comes upon a suitable planet to colonize. The only problem is that the planet is already inhabited-which shouldn't be a problem to overcome with their advanced weapons and technology. What the amazing thing is, is that this world looks almost exactly like the 'Barsoom' depicted by author Edgar Rice Burroughs in his Mars novels. The planet is red, like mars, has canals transporting its water system and the red skinned natives travel about in floating Ships when not using the canals. But there are some things extremely different, particularly concerning their reproductive cycle, which is very unique. At first the natives greet them in peace-but as the humans start showing their muscle the natives begin to plan something. Tom Carson, one of the first people to meet the natives, sympathizes with them and doesn't want their lands destroyed by his greedy companions. The natives' civilization is over two million years old, yet the don't have motors or electricity. Why? Because it was those things they found destructive and would only succeed in destroying them. While the humans on the spaceship begin their colonization plans the 'martians' start planning a retaliation of their own. If you're an ERB fan and are looking for something new (or old) to read that's in the same vein, then this is the book for you.
