I have to admit I watched the animated tv movie 1st, years ago, before reading the book. It's was cool and all back then, but in my 5th grade days I mostly wanted to keep up with a female friend of mine who was a Tolkien fan and knew ALL the shit from ALL the books. I wonder where that girl is now and if she's all hyped after the 1st two real films. Anyways, I decided to go back and give both a closer look and was surprised at how good this book is and how it held my attention. Way more detailed and much cooler than the 'cartoon' could ever have been, The Hobbit is the best starting point for anyone interested in Tolkien's work and the War of the Rings. Bilbo's adventures in this part of middle-earth kept me flippin' those pages for 3 days. I still laugh at how he turns from the shy, simple, hobbit into a brave, crafty, leader. Really, I know most people have read this or could care less so I just wanna bump our fiction review numbers up a bit. Hell, people actually study the author's work, so what else can I say? It's entertaining. It's filled with unforgettable characters. It's really a simple story to follow, so don't let the fact that it's pure fantasy in another world setting scare ya. There's monsters a plenty, war, sadness, friendship, and way too much else to even try and get into here. The fact that this thing is still constantly reprinted tells us all we need to know. Never thought I'd say it, but Elves, Dwarves, Wizards, and Hobbitses are all cool with me. Now where's the movie , damn it!
