This manga book is really f*cked up, but f*cked up in a really good, demented way. In fact, I LUV HALLOWEEN Vol 1 is one of the most disturbing things I've read in a long while.
The premise is that every Halloween a group of kids get together to go trick or treating. The leader is Finch, who wears a skull mask. His younger sister Bubbles seems insane - and this particular holiday she's dressed up as the tooth fairy and is obsessed with pulling out people's molars. When they leave their house to begin the evening's festivities we see that their abode looks abandoned - and that the corpses of their parents, all dehydrated looking, are still sitting around. When we meet the rest of the group we see that another kid is dressed as a pig, another a cat and another a devil. After they go to their first house and receive apples from an old lady, they just about have a fit because it means that their Halloween is screwed, because they didn't get candy. So what they do is have revenge on the old lady - and get a bunch of apples and put razor blades in them, handing them out. Finch gives one to a police officer, saying beforehand that Old Lady Finch gave him the apple. Of course, there's blood all over the place - and the cops go and arrest the lady, who doesn't know anything about this. And the fun - and victims--are just beginning.
The artwork by Benjamin Roman fits this tone exactly.
Although it's callous in how these psychotic kids do their business it's also incredibly hilarious, primarily because you don't expect kids to do the things these ones do. I LUV HALLOWEEN gets my highest recommendation.
