Although this book is labelled as a 'Paranormal Romance' (what romance isn't?), I picked up this book as it's written by the same author (different pseudonym) who pens the STARDOC novels - and those books are great.
IF ANGELS BURN is a well-written, intriguing vampire novel, the first in an ongoing series. The primary story revolves around an esteemed plastic surgeon named Alexandra, who is kidnapped by vampire Michael Cyprien to repair a horrible disfigurement to his face. He was captured by vampire hunters and they cut up his face so badly that his face is a mass of scar tissue with just an opening for a mouth. Vampires heal extraordinarily fast, so that when there's such a traumatic injury it doesn't heal correctly. For example, if a bone is broken and not set the right way than that bone will heal crooked.
I thought this a really good idea on the author's part, as I have not come across it in another vampire novel.
Of course, there's lots of hate/love back and forth between Alexandra and Cyprien, and there's a group of other vampires who refer to themselves as Darkyn. It seems that the majority of them were created in the 1400's and were only able to change others for a few hundred years after that. There has not been a new vampire created in a long time (they just die when exposed to their blood), but Alexandra starts to change, sort of human/vampire hybrid. The reason for this is cool - and has something to do specifically with what was going on during the Middle Ages.
Although there is the romance aspect of this book it doesn't get in the way of a very well-written vampire story with some unique twists on the genre. Highly recommended.
