Lawson's back again in his second book with even more great adventure than The Fixer. Poor guy, you gotta hate his luck in this one. He gets set-up and kills an innocent, then ends up looking after the man's son who is actually an invoker, a vampire with a special gift to manipulate and call forth spirits to aid himself when in need. This kid is a pretty powerful, untapped invoker to boot and there in lies our book. Next, he has to figure out the skinny as to why he was sent to kill this guy in the first place. Some evil bitch is after the kid to use in a ceremony to draw forth a very powerful demon that could be used in the worst of ways. Lawson has to protect and save the kid, stop this woman's plot, and deal with a nasty ex-fixer who's really behind the whole thing. All this with no support from the council he works for. Good thing Lawson has the help of a crusty old ex-elder vampire named Wirek, one of my favorite characters in either book so far, and a few others. Wirek's old ass proves a very good ally as well as a great part of the book. Lawson's taken from Boston to Tibet in his quest to save kid and stop assholes, but it's all in a days work for a fixer. The Invoker has a slightly different feel than the 1st book, which is a good thing since it doesn't feel repetitive or require that you have read the 1st to enjoy. The whole novel flows really well and it still feels like a fresh take on vampire lore in my book. Bring on book three, I'm ready.
