These two books collect issues 1-12 of the series. A low-level agent of S.H.I.E.L.D, Eric O'Grady steals the new Ant-man suit after the helicarrier is attacked and his best friend killed. His friend was the one originally selected to be the new hero. But Eric likes these new abilities and thinks it's very cool to be a super-hero. But he's anything BUT a do-gooder. He uses the suit to shrink down and spy on women. He even hits on his dead friend's girlfriend before the guy's corpse is even cold in the ground. At first he manages to hide the suit in his quarters but after his commanding officer figures it out it's him, he has to escape. Unfortunately he accidently burns half the guy's face off, which really makes him want to capture Eric. He wants to kill him. Eric sets up a new identity and when he has to register for the new government ordered Superhuman Registration Act, calls himself "Slaying Mantis". And he begins working for the superhero cleanup organization Damage Control, though he does it more for the money than anything else. He even starts dating one of his co-workers and continually lies to her face. Oh, and he steals stolen jewelry from a noted jewel thief and hocks it at a pawnshop. But when the Hulk returns from the Planet Skaar and says he's going to destroy New York, this new ant-man gets in way over his head when he tries to stop the green goliath.
These books are a hoot because this guy is such an inconsiderate ass. Yes, he does manage to redeem himself at the end of the second book, which is sort of corny, but it's such a fun read I didn't really mind this. THE IRREDEEMABLE ANT-MAN is very funny and very recommended.
