Dave Lizewski is a high school kid in New York City, obsessed with super hero comics since they are far more entertaining than real life. After a bit of soul-searching he decides to become the world's first real superhero. He buys a costume off Ebay and spends a few weeks prowling the nights before plunging into his first rescue. But he nearly gets killed, is hit by a car, and winds up in the hospital with shattered ribs, two broken legs and three metal plates in his head. It takes him months to recover and says it's quits. But he can't stop. On his next outing he stops a guy being beat up by a gang and actually wins. A bystander captures this on camera and posts it up on Youtube. He becomes an instant sensation and takes the name "Kick-Ass". He soon meets another superhero, the Red Mist, and they team up to save a woman's "baby" from a building fire. But the baby turns out to be a cat. By this time he gets the attention of an Italian Mob boss, who is sick and tired of two other super-heroes killing his men. This is Hit Girl and Big Daddy. Hit Girl is only a ten-year old girl but she's just like Wolverine and slices and dices the bad guys into sushi. Big Daddy is along the lines of The Punisher and Batman. Things get very interesting when they approach Kick-Ass for a team-up.
This is one of the most entertaining superhero tales I've read in a long while, up there with Garth Ennis' THE BOYS. Highly recommended.
