What a damn cool book. Imagine one of the Aliens from ALIEN let loose in ancient Rome and you get the basic idea. Here, a ferocious predator, bred to battle, survives a crashed spaceship and is captured by Lycon, a former gladiator who supplies wild animals to the Arena. There's a bit of back and forth as the creature escapes and is recaptured, but the final confrontation is not a disappointment. There's also another alien, in disguise as an Egyptian trader, who is trying to make sure that the creature is not killed-because he wants it to breed on Earth. The thing is, if it does breed, they will eventually kill everything on the planet. If you're looking for carnage and adventure I highly recommend this book. Written by David Drake.
