This comic book story begins with Carl's boss Tony Vicenzo finding him on a bender in a dive bar. Whatever he has gone through has really done a number on him. He recounts the story, of how Tony sent him to investigate a mysterious plane crash. He goes to the small town and almost immediately hooks up with a local waitress named Kathy. The next morning he goes to the Air Force briefing, which denies any sort of weirdness. Yet Kolchak finds out that the people who died were not pilots at all but scientists doing research. He interviews their family members and does some more investigation, which leads him to a place called the Lupoff Foundation. He sneaks in there and sees that they have recovered a UFO--and also are doing experiments on the alien survivor. Kolchak communicates with the being and is literally placed in its same predicament, experiencing all of the pain and torture it has gone through. Traumatized, he does the only thing he can do to put the alien out of its horrendous misery...
This is an intense little story and makes a great new "episode" for this long-lived character.
