This isn't a bad book-it's just too much like so many others I've read since THE RELIC. A monster on the rampage that's created by man. This time around a group of scientists, backed by the military, have created an indestructible, incredibly ferocious creature by altering the DNA of the Komodo Dragon. They were able to access genes that have been long dormant in the species, which suggests that the mighty creature they have 'created' actually existed on Earth millenia before--- as dragons. This dragon they have locked up in their secret island facility can even breath fire. Those in charge of the security want to destroy the creature before it can get loose on the world-and the army general and his scientists want to preserve it, foolhardily believing they can control the beast. Also on this island lives a giant of a man, a descent of the Vikings. In fact, he's had dreams of battling a dragon all of his life-and this creature presents a way for him to do what he always wanted to do-to fight evil head on, flesh to flesh. The primary characters of the story is a hired electrician and his wife and son, who are among the last survivors. It turns out that if the dragon escapes from within the confines of the mountain it will set off the failsafe nuclear bomb-and everyone will be destroyed. The Viking, who is a personal friend of theirs, comes in to save the day, armed only with a huge battle axe he had found. This all sounds sort of ridiculous-but author Huggins manages to make it work quite well. There's so much going on, nonstop action and tension that you forgive a lot of the probability. So, if you've enjoyed books such as SLEEPER, THE RELIC, VESPERS, FATALIS-then you'll enjoy this dragon story.Written by James Byron Huggins.
