It's quite simple: Jack Ketchum is one of the finest thriller writers working today. THE LOST tells the twisted tale of a homicidal young man named Ray Pye, who kills two girls in a state park in the summer of 1965 for fun. Two teenage friends, Ray and Jennifer, witness the crime and help cover it up. The trio think they got away with the crime scott-free, but four years later, there's a relentless local cop still pushing to bust Ray as the sixties come to a close. This Manson-era timeframe is the perfect setting as everyone's guilt and insanity are carefully unveiled by Ketchum in a novel of double-crosses, paranoia, revenge, and just plain madness. The story felt full and real to me in this book and once you start it, it's hard to put down. Ketchum does some excellent characterizations here and really builds things up to a smashing bloodbath of a climax. When Ray Pye goes over the edge, he gives Norman Bates a run for his money. This is a powerful and thrilling read. You won't forget it!
