Author: John VarleyThis a rollicking, fun and surprising time travel adventure, about what happens when multi-billionaire Howard Christian tries to clone a Woolly Mammoth for his new animal park. While uncovering the 12,000 intact carcass of a mammoth his expedition also discovers the skeleton of a man wearing a watch-and holding a metal box which may be a time travel device. Christian hires Matt Wright, an expert on the physics of time to discover if this is the case. He also hires Susan Morgan, an elephant handler, who will be in charge of the cloned mammoth baby. Least to say, Matt and Susan are hurled back in time, where they encounter a large herd of mammoths as well as prehistoric Americans. When they return to the present they bring these creatures with them-and they run through modern-day LAThe story alternates with the story of 'Fuzzy', the baby mammoth, the relationship between Susan and Matt, and Howard Christian's quest for fame. Also, the answer to the time-travel and who that skeleton belonged to, is surprising and fits well with the ending.Although this is much different than Varley's TITAN series, it is a great read, particularly if you're a time-travel enthusiast.
