At first I thought this was a reprint of the old WHERE MONSTERS DWELL comic from the early Marvel comics. Fortunately, I was surprised to see that they are new, sarcastic stories done in that exact same style. The first story has Devil Dinosaur battling the Hulk. Then, it's a story of Bombu, (written by Keith Giffen of I LUV HALLOWEEN) who looks like he's wearing a witch doctor mask. When he appears on a crowded street and says he has the destructive power of the "Wallah Wallah Bing Bang" and will deploy the "Ting Tang" the cops make fun of him because it's just like that old witch doctor song from the 50's! But perhaps the most entertaining is FING FANG FOOM, in which four giant monsters are shrunk down to human size. These are Goom, Fing Fang Foom, Gorgilla and the robot Elektro. As the tiny Goom walks down the street amongst humans he mutters "...bugs...crush you all like...", though now he's like four feet tall. These four former giant monsters help defend the Earth against an alien invaders with some of the Fantastic Four's resources. Also, these humorous stories are interspersed with reprints of original stories as well as such TALES TO ASTONISH's "I Found the Ninth Wonder of the World", which turns out to be a giant turtle, and "Titano", a giant crab.
MARVEL MONSTERS is a hoot and had me chuckling and even laughing at points. In fact, this is the most entertaining graphic novel I've read in a long time. Highly recommended.
