The one thing about Steve Alten's MEG books is that they never disappoint. And with HELL'S AQUARIUM he's gone totally gung-ho about introducing a plethora of new prehistoric sea survivors to the modern world.
This 4th book in the series takes place four years after the events of the third, in which the Megalodon named Angel had given birth to five pups. These many creatures are more than Jonas Taylor's Tanaka Institute in Monterey can handle, especially when there are some recent fatalities during a show. A possible solution comes in the way of a new aquarium complex being built in the Middle East. They wish to purchase two of the baby Megs. However, they also want to employ Jonas' son, David, for the Summer, since he has a great deal of experience dealing with the massive prehistoric sharks.
However, they also want David for another reason. They are sending exploration vessels down to the Philippine Sea Plate, where there may be other survivors from the past. And they want to capture these creatures to display in the new Aquarium. This turns out to be an underwater LOST WORLD, a huge 500 square mile ocean trapped beneath the known floor of the ocean.
Sure, this tale may not be as plausible as the previous books but it is a fun, exciting read. I particularly liked the revelation about the Megalodons and how they reproduce, not to mention the new ferocious critters of the deep.
