I've never read anything by E.F. Martinez before but if this book is any indication of what's in store, all his previous novels have just been added to my reading list.
The three main characters are Judy, Monster and Chester. Judy is a young woman who works at a dead-end job at an all night food Mart. She's never been able to get her act together, primarily because she has the ability to see things, such as mythical and "imaginary" monsters. Only, like 99% of humanity her brain isn't able to process this so she promptly forgets. When she finds a Yeti in the freezer one night she calls Animal Control and they send out a guy named Monster. For all practical purposes he's a normal guy, though he does have abilities, which vary depending on what color he is. He wakes up each day a different color--and with a different ability--ever since he was bitten by a Basilisk years ago. It sometimes comes in handy on his job, which is to capture "Cryptos" alive. And then there's Chester, an interdimensional being that helps Monster on his job--and who shapes his form out of a piece of paper.
One creature appearance after another, such as trolls pouring out of Judy's closed, draw her and Monster together. Encountering so many monsters in so short a time is more than coincidence and they are not sure why--until they encounter a powerful being who has a penchant for transforming everything into cats. So they have to go up against this all-powerful crazy cat lady and ultimately save the universe. Yes, th book is funny but the humor arises from the absurdity of the situations and the characters taking the situations so seriously. This is definitely not a spoof. Highly recommended, along the lines of the shows THE MIDDLEMAN and SPECIAL UNIT 2, only better realized here in novel form.
