This new mummy book, based upon the first Universal Mummy movie, is a reworking of that tale. It takes place in present day, with millionaire Josh Brandt determined to pick up his father's legacy of uncovering an ancient Egyptian tomb. It was always a mystery how is father disappeared during an excavation and he hopes to find an answer.
He has a sister who has multiple personality disorder and she develops the new personality of an Egyptian princess, which is no coincidence since Josh's archeology crew is uncovering the tomb of that very same woman. And then there's Ardath Bey, an ancient looking Egyptian who says he knew Josh's father, a man who may indeed be the immortal Imhotep, entombed thousands of years ago. It was his tomb that was discovered by Josh's father. And the Egyptian princess? She was his bride to be.
But there's a curse that goes along with opening the princess' tomb, a curse which methodically kills each member of Josh's extended family. The dead come to life and destroy them. Granted, it will remind you a bit of the movie DAWN OF THE MUMMY, but not in a cheesy way.
This book is up there with DRACULA: ASYLUM, SHADOW OF FRANKENSTEIN and PANDORA'S BRIDE and author Michael Paine creates some interesting characters and creepy situations. Much of the book takes place in Egypt and, as someone who has traveled to that country and seen a lot of those tombs, the story has an authentic feel to it, so if the author hasn't actually been to the Nile he's definitely done his research.
